Razer Kraken 7.1 review

I was looking to move up from my Turtle Beach stereo headset that served me well for the last two years. After much thought, I decided on the Kraken 7.1. Everything about this headset has a quality feel to it, from the packaging to the foam padding for your ears. The headset feels well built, solid, and flexible enough to accommodate a variety of head shapes and sizes. The green LED lighting on the cups is a nice added touch, although it is only green (Razer has addressed this by releasing the Razer 7.1 Chroma).

Some bullet points from the Razer website are:

  • 7.1 virtual surround sound, calibrated through Razer Synapse.
  • Enhanced digital unidirectional microphone with a 100-12,000Hz response, 63dB signal-to-noise ratio, and -40+/-4dB of sensitivity.
  • 40mm Neodymium drivers with a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz, 32 Ohm impedance, and 30mW of output power.
  • Designed for extended gaming comfort.
  • Closed ear cup design for sound isolation.
  • Foldable ear cups for portability.
  • PC/Mac support through a gold-plated, 2 meter, braided USB cable.

I can tell you that after several months of use and extended gaming sessions that I really like this headset. The virtual surround sound is rather spot on for most of my games and has given me an edge when playing. The headset is comfortable to the point where I don’t even realize I’m wearing it after a while. The microphone seems to be above-par compared to other headsets I have used. The only downside/upside is the noise isolation. The ear cups really do cut down on surrounding noise; however, I also have problems hearing myself speak, which causes me to speak louder than I need to. I would have liked to see Razer add a built-in loop. I understand that you can loop back through Windows and other software but there is always a minor delay which throws me off, especially while streaming.

Overall, I think this headset is well worth the cash. From the quality of the build to the solid audio performance, I don’t think you could go wrong purchasing one for you to use.
